Asia and the Pacific is the most disaster-prone region in the world. Over the past 50 years, natural hazards in Asia and the Pacific have affected 6.9 billion people and killed more than 2 million. In 2021 alone, floods and storms accounted for 80% of natural hazard events in Asia, directly affecting 48.3 million people, and causing total economic damages of US$ 35.6 billion According to the 2020 Asian Development Water Outlook, 22 out of 49 countries in the region are facing water security which represents 2 billion people, or 50% of the regions population.
The TA will target the following DMCs including Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan and Tajikistan based on their national water security rating as assessed by the ADWO 2020, which assessed the majority of the target countries as water insecure.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy The TA subproject will have the following outcome: resilient investments and policies in the water sector increased, which is aligned to the overall TA cluster outcome. This will be achieved through high-level engagement on water security among key decision-makers, the development of knowledge products and services, and capacity building activities.
