Project Name Cameroon Securing the Swiss hospital in Mada
Project Detail Since 2014, the Far North of Cameroon has experienced an armed conflict, which pits the countries of the Lake Chad Basin against Non-State Armed Groups. The Swiss hospital in Mada is one of the rare infrastructures that is still able to provide medical services in this region. The security project allows the hospital to continue its work, even in difficult conditions. The Far North region in general and Logone & Chari in particular do not have a sufficient number of state hospitals. Since 2014, a major humanitarian crisis has affected the region, caused by the actions of Non-State Armed Groups (GANEs). Mada hospital is a reference point for NGOs operating in the region. It covers 10 health areas with around 175,000 people between host population, displaced people & refugees. The hospitals surgical capacity attracts patients from neighboring countries such as Chad, Nigeria, and Niger. We register around 200 patients per day (hospitalization + outpatient consultations) and we have a capacity of 150 beds. The Swiss Hospital of Mada is part of the vision of the ICRC Delegation which covers the costs of the patients it refers. The ICRC has made strengthening passive security a priority. On 02.07.2022, the Mada hospital was attacked by ISWAP and the closure of the Swiss Hospital in Mada caused an increase in morbidity and mortality among gunshot wounds and women of child-bearing age. procreate throughout the area.
