Northland Power was awarded the rights to develop areas originally known as N2 and N4 in the Scottish Waters, supporting Scotland’s journey to net zero.
The selected sites offer a mixture of water depths, allowing for both fixed (Spiorad na Mara) and floating (Havbredey) foundation technologies (no hybrid sites). Both sites benefit from some of the best wind resources in Europe, providing above-average net capacity factors but also challenging metocean conditions.
During the autumn and winter of 2022, Northland spent time engaging with people in the local community, including school children and the Gaelic department at UHI Outer Hebrides, to establish more appropriate and meaningful names for the projects.
This led to the creation of Spiorad na Mara (N4) and Havbredey (N2), with both names reflecting the area in which the projects are situated, including its rich cultural heritage and history.
In May 2023, Northland signed definitive agreements with ESB, a leading Irish energy company, for a 24.5% interest in the ScotWind portfolio. Northland retains a 75.5% stake in each project and continue to lead the development, construction, and operation of the projects.
