Project Name Morocco - Power Transmission Network Development and Rural Electrification Programme (PDRTE-ER)
Project Detail Project General Description The Power Transmission Network Development and Rural Electrification Programme (PDRTE-ER) is an investment operation. It aims to improve the safety and efficiency of electricity supply in a sustainable development framework. The programme covers the construction and extension of: (i) power lines and substations (VHV and HV) to address current energy transmission constraints and ensure the evacuation of electricity to be generated through the development of additional production capacity, including renewable sources (solar and wind) and power grids (MV/LV) to provide widespread access to power in Moroccan rural areas. It will help to extend the interconnected grid and increase its transmission capacity, ensuring that the energy produced by solar and wind power plants under development or planned for 2020 can be evacuated. In addition, the PDRTE-ER contribute to the strong penetration of renewable and clean energy in the national energy mix, thus mitigating the effects of power generation on climate change, enabling Morocco to meet its national and international commitments in this area. The total cost of the programme is estimated at EUR 352.33 million. It will be carried out over five (5) years from 2020 to 2024. It comprises three components detailed below: (A) Power transmission; (B) Rural electrification; (C) Programme management. Project Objectives The programmes overall objective is to improve the security and efficiency of power supply in a sustainable development framework. Specifically, it aims to: (i) increase the transmission capacity of the national grid with a view to improving the security and efficiency of electricity supply and the overall technical performance of the national power system; (ii) guarantee the injection of additional power generated from renewable production sources (solar and wind) under development and the evacuation (transmission) of this energy to consumption centres or areas; and (iii) contribute to increasing the share of clean energy in the national electricity mix and mitigating the climate change impacts of power generation; and (iv) ensure widespread access to power supply in rural areas.
