Work Detail CPB Contractors has won a US$241m (A$370m) contract to help turn the Royal Australian Air Force’s Townsville base in northern Queensland into the country’s new “Army Capital”. The upgrade is part of a restructuring of the armed forces to bolster their northern presence. Hundreds of soldiers will move there, including the 1st Aviation Regiment from Darwin, and the 16th Aviation Brigade from Brisbane. RAAF Townsville is already home to some 4,500 Australian Defence Force personnel, but from 2025 another 500 will move to the historic 900ha air base, in operation since 1940. “We are focused on delivering expanded, fit for purpose facilities to support and serve the Australian Army’s increasing numbers and spatial needs,” said Jason Spears, CPB Contractors’ managing director. The company said that, subject to governmental approvals, design will start this year, with construction beginning in 2025 and completion due in 2028.
