Project Name Proposal for a grant from the special relief fund for emergency aid to people affected by flooding on Lake Tanganyika
Project Detail Burundi, like other countries in the East African Community, has been hard hit by the El Niño phenomenon, with torrential rains triggering landslides, flooding leading to the displacement of populations, and the presence of water in Lake Tanganyika. The city of Bujumbura and the Gatumba region, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, were severely affected. The total cost of the Banks emergency aid is estimated at three hundred and seventy-one three hundred and two units of account (371,302 UA), equivalent to five hundred thousand US dollars (500,000 USD). Project Objectives The main objective of the Bank Groups emergency aid to Burundi is to improve the living conditions of the populations affected by the flooding around Lake Tanganyika in the areas of health, nutrition, water, hygiene and sanitation. To achieve this objective, it is necessary to improve the affected populations access to drinking water, sanitation, hygiene, health care and emergency nutritional aid.
