Project Name Power Transmission Strengthening and Integration of Renewable Energy Project Project Number 57232-001 Country / Economy Bangladesh Project Status Approved The proposed Power Transmission Strengthening and Integration of Renewable Energy Project (the project) will support the government in (i) enhancing the reliability, resiliency, and efficiency of the power transmission grid in the rural areas and (ii) integrating the anticipated increase in renewable energy generation in the Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) Hub in Southern Chattogram in Bangladesh. The project will have the following outcome: quality, reliability, and efficiency of power supply system in the project area improved. The project outputs will be (i) Disaster- and Climate-resilient and GESI-responsive power transmission infrastructure enhanced and modernized, (ii) Integration of renewable energy supported, and (iii) Institutional capacity of PGCB improved. The executing agency is Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB). The project will be financed by a loan of $200 million from Asian Development Banks (ADB) ordinary capital resources. The project outputs as follows: Output 1: Disaster- and climate-resilient and GESI-responsive power transmission infrastructure enhanced and modernized. This output will support building disaster- and climate-resilient and GESI-responsive power transmission infrastructure through (i) construction of 1,980 megavolt-ampere (MVA) of 230/132 kilovolt (KV) and 1,230 MVA of 132/33 kV transformers installed in 9 substations at Monohordi, Dupchachia, Tungipara, Kustia, Mathbaria, Paikgacha, Matlab, Madhavpur, and Chatkhil, (ii) installing 6.7 kilometer (km) (230kV double circuit) and 141.3 km (132 kV double circuit) of new disaster- and climate-resilient transmission lines, and 75 km (132kV double circuit) of reconducting transmission lines, and (iii) installing 10 numbers of 132kV bay extensions. Output 2: Integration of renewable energy supported. This output will facilitate the integration of renewable energy generation from the VRE Hub in Southern Chattogram and enhance the reliability, resilience, and efficiency of the national power grid by (i) installing 2,160 MVA of 400/230/132 kV transformer capacities in a new disaster- and climate-resilient and GESI-responsive substation, (ii) installing 6.7 km of 400 kV double circuit, 0.5 km of 230kV double circuit, and 1.3 km of 132kV double circuit new disaster- and climate-resilient transmission lines. Output 3: Institutional capacity of PGCB improved. This output will strengthen the capacity of PGCB by (i) increasing PGCB staffs (90% of relevant women staff) knowledge and capacity of advanced technologies, operation and maintenance skills, and emergency management of the power transmission system, and environmental and social safeguards, (ii) strengthening the in-house corporate environmental, gender and social unit, including in respect of corporate environmental and social safeguard procedures, (iii) developing a corporate GESI strategy, (iv) developing a roadmap and action plan for commercial borrowing for PGCB, and identifying areas where the capacity of PGCB can be improved, and (v) enhancing capacity for PGCBs fixed asset registry management.
