Project Notice

Project Name Sustainable forest management
Project Detail Central America boasts unparalleled natural wealth, offering the opportunity to generate inclusive wealth from biodiversity. In this context, the public and private sectors are increasingly investing in promoting sustainable forest management. However, the region must overcome specific bottlenecks that prevent the sustainable use of its resources, and the main obstacle, related to sustainable forest management, still needs to be addressed. In 2022, the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Cooperation and Foreign Trade (MAE) adopted a new regional strategy for Central America that aims to support regional development objectives, with an emphasis on the socio-economic integration of women and youth, climate resilience and environmental sustainability, as well as social cohesion and human rights. In this context, the MFA has entrusted LuxDev with the implementation of a project, Support for Sustainable Forest Management, aimed at strengthening forest value chains and the recovery of degraded forests in Central America. Thus, in addition to the aforementioned strategy, the project also takes into account the MFAs financial inclusion strategy and its environment and climate change strategy. The project includes three main axes: axis 1 – technical assistance to the Forest and Climate Change Fund (FFCC); axis 2 – support for wood and non-wood product value chains; axis 3 – strengthening social inclusion. The overall objective of the project is to reduce deforestation rates in degraded and secondary forests by strengthening sustainable value chains that contribute to overall rural development, the quality of life of local communities and the resilience of ecosystems. Axis 1 aims to help the FFCC increase its reach and profitability in line with its theory of change, with the main objective of reducing deforestation rates in degraded and secondary forests. Axes 2 and 3 extend this support to forest communities and organizations to ensure inclusive and sustainable economic development in Costa Rica, focusing on the development of timber and timber value chains, as well as the social inclusion of women and youth.
