Saint Kitts And Nevis Project Notice - Shades Of Earth – Women In The Spotlight Of Climate Change

Project Notice

PNR 70998
Project Name Shades of Earth – Women in the Spotlight of Climate Change
Project Detail Project Name and Objectives/activities to be implemented under the grant: Shades of Earth ? Women in the Spotlight of Climate Change STK/SGP/OP7/CORE/24/02 The global climate crisis has significant potential to yield conflicts on both the personal and population level. Regarding the latter, wars have been waged over limited natural resources such as water and battles fought over finite space when terrestrial lands have been eroded or left fallow due to adverse climate effects. On the personal/interpersonal level, climate exacerbated extreme weather events such as high heat, inland flooding, agricultural droughts, and intense tropical storms have increased the incidence of assault, domestic violence, and other types of physical abuses particularly against women. Moreover, as many of the extreme weather events tend to restrict movement, women are unfortunately forced to spend more time and share confined spaces with their abusers whether the perpetrator is a relative or a friend, long-time colleague, or part-time collaborator. As such, in addition to ensuring that their basic needs of food, water and shelter are met, women are faced with fighting for their safety. In the Caribbean, particularly where women and girls tend to carry the highest burdens of and vulnerabilities to various types of emotional, verbal, physical and sexual violence the issue is both deep and pervasive. This Garden of Rebirth (GofRb) supported project, titled ?Shades of Earth (SOE) ? Women in the Spotlight of Climate Change?, aims to increase awareness and proffer sustainable solutions surrounding the victims and survivors of violence. This unique endeavor acknowledges that violence can be and has been heightened due extreme weather events driven by climate change, particularly in St. Kitts and Nevis. This SOE initiative seeks to be transformative and restorative through the combination of a scientific method involving cross-sectional analysis and the creative power of theater.??
