Austria Project Notice - High-Energy, Low-Cost And Scalable Generation 5 Magnesium-Based Batteries For Mobility Applications And Beyond

Project Notice

PNR 70939
Project Name High-energy, low-cost and scalable generation 5 magnesium-based batteries for mobility applications and beyond
Project Detail HighMag proposes rechargeable magnesium batteries as sustainable, low-cost alternatives to Li-ion batteries using two cathode chemistries: a magnesium sulphur battery with a conversion cathode and a magnesium metal battery with an insertion cathode. HighMag will also develop a powder-based anode using protectively coated, Mg-based powder particles, that is compatible with both cathodes. HighMag will advance developments on the active materials, electrolyte, and components levels, to improve the performance of rechargeable magnesium batteries by incorporating electrocatalysts, stabilising the interphases, and applying protective coatings on the cathode and anode particles. In addition, HighMag will perform advanced characterisation at the bulk, surface, and gas-levels and introduce iterative feedback loops to contribute to the deep understanding of the structure-processing-property relationships for RMBs. HighMag not only focuses on technology development, but also addresses the sustainability and safety of the proposed materials and technologies. Comprehensive SSbD principles will be applied, and recycling strategies will be proposed, including design for recycling, during project implementation. Furthermore, due to the technological and scientific advancements proposed, the reversible magnesium batteries developed in HighMag will achieve an EUCAR level of 3 for mobility applications. HighMag also addresses the manufacturability of the proposed technological solutions by implementing aqueous-based electrode processing, performing compatibility assessments with existing lithium-ion production infrastructure. These procedures will be supplemented by developing business guidelines, that outline the optimal conditions for future scale up, and exploitation of the project results supporting the EU battery industry. Using the approaches and innovations, HighMag will credibly advance the Mg-based, generation 5 technology from TRL2 to TRL4.
