Project Notice

PNR 70845
Project Name Calauit Safari Park Improvement Project
Project Detail Calauit Safari Park is a game reserve and wildlife sanctuary in Calauit Island, Busuanga, Palawan. It was established in 1976 and had since featured African giraffes and zebras and housed critically endangered species native to Palawan. Over the years, the park went through changes and faced various challenges, including issues in the maintenance of the entire park, deteriorating facilities, and inadequate complementary activities for visitors to enjoy aside from the park’s highlight feature of experiencing a close encounter with the safari animals. Among the components of the project are the proposed renovation of the main building and expansion of the waiting area to accommodate an increase in the number of tourists or visitors; construction of additional gazebos for feeding giraffes; and the procurement of e-tricycles for the safari tour. Other key features involve the potential integration of adventure-type activities, such as All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) tours and the establishment of lodging units and restaurants outside the animals’ enclosure to increase the visitors’ length of stay. To deter poaching, a fence enclosing the savannah is further proposed, alongside the improvement of animal enclosures. Likewise proposed is the establishment of a souvenir shop that will sell the park’s merchandise as well as locally-produced souvenirs. This will increase park revenues and bolster economic activity in the neighboring communities who may sell their native handicrafts as part of the park’s souvenirs. Project Objectives The project aims to increase the number of visitors and enhance visitor experience, as well as increase PGP revenues generated from the park. The project is also seen to improve tourism activities in the municipality and the northern Palawan tourism cluster. As such, the project aligns with the tourism goals of the Municipality of Busuanga, as well as with the development thrusts of the Provincial Government which is geared toward ecological tourism development.
