Sierra Leone Project Notice - Inclusive Governance Peace And Prosperity Portfolio (IGPAP)

Project Notice

PNR 70713
Project Name Inclusive Governance Peace and Prosperity Portfolio (IGPAP)
Project Detail Sierra Leone has made notable progress in governance and public health management since its civil war, successfully navigating crises such as the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, while also addressing a rising cost-of-living crisis. Despite these advancements, significant governance issues linger, impacting transparency, accountability, and political stability, as evidenced by the country’s ranking of 108th out of 180 in the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index. While womens representation in parliament and local councils has improved due to the Gender and Women’s Empowerment Act, the country still ranks poorly on the Gender Inequality Index, highlighting ongoing challenges such as gender-based violence and marginalization of individuals with disabilities. Access to justice and limited civic engagement, particularly in rural areas, further complicate the socio-political landscape. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aims to bolster public trust in governance and enhance justice and security through various initiatives. These include supporting legislative reforms, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting gender equality and womens empowerment. By enhancing public service delivery and financial management, as well as fostering local revenue capacities, UNDP seeks to create an inclusive, gender-responsive governance framework. Additionally, peacebuilding efforts will address socio-economic inequalities and promote social cohesion. The overall goal is to strengthen oversight and accountability, uphold human rights, and ensure that governance institutions effectively address the needs of vulnerable groups, ultimately working towards a just, equitable, and prosperous society in Sierra Leone
