Project Notice

PNR 70161
Project Name WASTE PREVENTION AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY TO PROTECT THE OCEAN AND CORALS
Project Detail Project number: 2019.2109.7 Status: ongoing project The technical capacities of relevant actors to implement measures to reduce the discharge of land-based waste into the sea have improved in selected ASEAN countries. The increase in marine litter caused by inadequate waste management and recycling is threatening the marine and coastal environment worldwide, including in the ASEAN region. Environmentally sound waste management to protect the marine environment is therefore increasingly being perceived as a transboundary challenge. As a regional community, ASEAN member states have recognized the urgent need for joint action and have made remarkable progress in the fight against marine litter. With the adoption of the ASEAN Framework for Action on Marine Litter and the implementation of the Regional Action Plan to Combat Marine Litter in ASEAN member states (2021 to 2025), an important foundation has been created for regional cooperation, which is necessary due to the transboundary dimension of marine litter. At the same time, this cooperation increases the visibility of national efforts and promotes the exchange of best practices. Objective As regional expertise in reducing land-based waste inputs grows, the marine environment in the ASEAN region will be better protected. Approach The project implements measures in four areas: At the regional level, it promotes cooperation and knowledge management among representatives of the ASEAN working groups dealing with marine litter and plastic pollution. It supports the development of national measures to reduce waste inputs in the priority countries and their implementation in local strategies. It calls for a greater contribution from the private sector to waste reduction. At the national level, pilot projects along the value chain, ranging from sustainable consumption and improved waste collection to recycling, are being implemented in selected communities.
