| Project Detail |
The earthquakes in southern Türkiye on 6 February 2023 and the days that followed killed at least 50,700 people and destroyed more than 313,000 buildings. They left 3.3 million people homeless across 11 provinces with a territory of 110,000 sq km and a population of 15.6 million (including half of the 3.7 million Syrians enjoying temporary protection in the country). The region’s education infrastructure suffered heavy damage during the earthquakes. According to initial estimates, at least 7 percent of state-run schools across 11 provinces either collapsed entirely or were sufficiently damaged to require immediate demolition. Another 35 percent were either moderately or lightly damaged. In the worst-affected areas – Adiyaman, Hatay, Kahramanmaras and Malatya provinces, and two districts of Gaziantep – the scale and scope of destruction were far higher. The Project, “Croatia rebuilds inclusive schools project (CRISP)” will address both challenges simultaneously – first, the need to repair and rebuild damaged and destroyed educational infrastructure across the earthquake zone; and, second, the imperative of ensuring that children with disabilities enjoy an inclusive and quality education, on an equal footing with all other schoolchildren |
