Project Notice

PNR 69583
Project Name ST. JOSEPHS HOSPITAL EXPANSION TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE IN EAST JERUSALEM
Project Detail The project aims to support the development of healthcare provision and capacity at Saint Joseph Hospital. It will thus contribute to meeting the healthcare needs of the Palestinian population in East Jerusalem. CONTEXT The Palestinian healthcare system is under significant pressure due to the growing needs of a population living in difficult social and economic conditions, the fragmentation of the Palestinian territories, and the impact of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict since October 7, 2023, have significantly increased healthcare needs throughout the Palestinian territories. In this context, Saint Josephs Hospital plays an important role in providing a wide range of healthcare services. Strategically located in East Jerusalems Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, its mission is to provide quality healthcare to the Palestinian population. With 155 beds, it is the third largest hospital in East Jerusalem. DESCRIPTION The project has two objectives. The first is to expand the healthcare offerings (intensive care and outpatient clinical care) available to the Palestinian population in East Jerusalem, through new energy-efficient infrastructure that is resilient to the effects of climate change. The second is to improve medical training at Saint Josephs Hospital to develop the skills of healthcare personnel. Supported by the European Union, the PEEB Med (Programme for Energy Efficiency in Buildings in the Mediterranean) has proposed energy efficiency measures based on energy consumption data from existing buildings. These measures target existing buildings and new ones to be constructed as part of the project, with an emphasis on improving the thermal performance of uninsulated areas to minimize heat loss.
