In Sri Lanka, more than 90% of natural disasters are weather- and climate-related, and every year, various places suffer damage from floods, lightning strikes, strong winds, and droughts. In response to this situation, the National Policy Framework vistas of prosperity and splendour, which is a national policy of Sri Lanka, has set the strengthening of disaster warning systems as a strategy for the disaster management sector, and the Sri Lanka Meteorological Department (DOM) is updating its equipment, technology, and knowledge with the aim of issuing timely and accurate weather forecasts and warnings and providing meteorological information. This project aims to strengthen the DOMs capacity to observe, forecast, and disseminate meteorological information by reliably implementing meteorological observations using weather radars, improving its analytical capabilities, and improving its information dissemination capabilities. With this, we aim to widely utilize meteorological information and forecasts to reduce damage caused by meteorological disasters. [Overall goal] Accurate meteorological information and forecasts are widely used to reduce damage caused by meteorological disasters in Sri Lanka. [Project purpose] DOMs capacity to observe, forecast, and disseminate meteorological information is improved. [Outcomes] Outcome 1: Weather observations, including observations by weather radar, are reliably carried out. Outcome 2: Weather analysis capabilities are improved. Outcome 3: DOM acquires the ability to explain the features and usage of precipitation maps to disaster prevention organizations. Outcome 4: The ability to disseminate weather information is strengthened. |
