Project Name Bangladesh Modern Food Storage Facilities Project
Project Detail The development objective of the Modern Food Storage Facilities Project for Bangladesh is to increase the grain reserve available to households to meet their post-disaster needs and improve the efficiency of grain storage management. The project has three components. The first component, constructions of modern grain storage silo facilities primary objectives are to: (i) improve the storage capacity for grain at the country level by financing the construction of modern steel silos for rice and wheat that will be built in accordance with social and environmental sustainability parameters and safeguards compliance criteria; and (ii) facilitate households' access to domestic silos for food grain and seed storage to improve household-level food security during and after natural disasters. It has following three sub-components: (a) construction of modern public food grain storage silos; (b) provision of household-level storage facilities or family silos, particularly in the disaster-prone areas of the coastal zone; and (c) implementation of social and environmental management plans. The second component, support for food planning and monitoring program objective is threefold: (i) to enhance the institutional capacity of Director General (DG) Food and the Food Planning Monitoring Unit (FPMU) and support these agencies in carrying out their respective mandates; (ii) to address analytical gaps and support the development of an evidence-based policy framework to improve the efficiency and performance of the country's overall food storage system and management of strategic grain reserves; and (iii) to improve the coordination of public agencies (in particular DG Food and FPMU with Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR)) involved in procurement, public storage, and distribution of food grains, as well as disaster relief. The third component, project management, construction supervision, technical assistance, training, and strategic studies will finance costs required to ensure adequate overall management of the project, monitoring and evaluation of the activities implemented, and capacity enhancement of selected stakeholders.
