Project ID 200086 Thematic Priority Creating Shared Prosperity LocationSuriname The pineapple value chain is a priority value chain in the Government of Suriname’s drive to diversify its economy from heavy reliance on the extractive industry. In 2018-2019, in response to a request by the Government of Suriname, FAO, UNIDO and ITC applied the Accelerator for Agriculture and Agroindustry Development and Innovation Plus (3ADI+), a joint value chains and market systems development initiative, to the pineapple sub-sector.Moving from this solid preparatory phase to implementation, the joint programme will foster stakeholder cooperation and engagement and promote SDG-compliant public and private investments in innovation at each value chain stage (i.e. production, processing, and distribution). To assure a long-term sustainability of the action, the technical component will involve a strengthening of the innovative capacities of national institutes and public extension and market promotion services. In sum, the programme represents a unique opportunity to channel investments into productive activities and generate incomes for poor rural communities. By de-risking investments through the provision of technical assistance to develop bankable business models and support policy forms, and through the use of several financial mechanisms such as matching grants and smart subsidies, the project is expected to promote catalytic public and private investments that will generate US$10 million in value added per year by 2030. The value added generated by sustainable products thanks to improved production practices and newly established processing facilities will mainly accrue to poor rural communities in Suriname’s interior |
