Project Detail Project No. SCSC 04 2023S Project Title Assisting Policymakers with Mitigation and Prevention of Plastics Pollution - Standards as a Resource for the Policy Framework Project Status Project in Implementation Fund Account Self-Funded Project Year 2023 Sponsoring Forum Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance (SCSC) Topics Conformance; Standards Committee Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI) Economies worldwide are faced with growing levels of land and marine plastic waste. With the United Nations Environment Assembly’s negotiations for a global treaty on plastic pollution underway, this project aims to support APEC stakeholders by identifying a science-based toolkit to support a policy framework for managing plastics and mitigating plastics pollution. Technical, science-based consensus standards offer a “best practice” resource for creating and implementing inclusive, collaborative, practical solutions. Survey (issued May 2023) feedback will identify overarching topics for two workshops: one in-person (August 2023), one virtual (2024). Workshop programs will enable dialogue about challenges and solutions and incorporate discussions about needed or existing international standards. Information shared during the workshops will be collated into the toolkit. The project builds upon preceding APEC goals, commitments, and activities including the APEC Roadmap on Marine Debris, New Zealand’s Aotearoa Action Plan, and Thailand’s 2022 prioritization of the Bio-Circular-Green Economy.
