Project Notice

PNR 34761
Project Name ZENTRUM FUER RESSOURCEN UND ENERGIE HAMBURG
Project Detail The project consists of different waste treatment facilities to process around 320 000 tons/year generated within the city of Hamburg in Germany. The project concerns a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) a biogas combined with a compost unit, a biomass plant and a medium-scale waste-to-energy plant processing the so-called Refuse Derive Fuel. The project aims at recovering both material and energy. Objectives The project aims at achieving the objectives as per EU Directives, which govern the waste management sector in Member States, notably the new waste legislation under Circular Economy Package adopted in July 2018. It is expected that the project will contribute to achieving good economic benefits in line with that legislative package. This package aims at recycling at least 65% by weight of municipal waste by 2035, recycling at least 70% of packaging waste by 2030 and a binding landfill target to reduce landfill to maximum of 10% of municipal waste by 2035. Finally, the project will contribute to achieving climate change objectives by reducing direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from waste management and by substituting energy generated from fossil origin with renewable alternatives.
