Project Notice

PNR 33538
Project Name WP Clean cooking and electricity for low-income households in Uganda
Project Detail SHORT DESCRIPTION: Overall goal The project objective is to supply low-income households in rural Uganda with electricity and efficient high-tech biomass cooking stoves. The Dutch social enterprise African Clean Energy BV (ACE), with its subsidiaries in Uganda, Lesotho, South Africa and Cambodia, enables thousands of families in poor rural areas to meet their electricity and energy needs for cooking. ACE developed a highly efficient biomass furnace ("ACE1") with built-in fan to optimize the combustion process. A small photovoltaic system with solar panel and a battery connected to the ACE1 supplies power for the fan, for lighting and for charging mobile phones. Expected results An efficient distribution network is being set up, and 10,000 people, 50% of them women, will be supplied with innovative biomass cooking stoves. 22 additional jobs will be created, including 11 for women. Employees are trained in sales, technical service, sustainability issues and health and environmental issues. The ACE1 is manufactured at ACEs own plant in Lesotho. In the medium term, production in Uganda is planned. Target group / Beneficiaries High-efficiency biomass furnaces are high-tech products with very low pollutant emissions and significantly lower fuel consumption than open fireplaces or traditional ovens. The target group of the project includes low-income population groups in rural areas as well as families in refugee camps. rough, which usually bear the burden of housekeeping, and children, the biggest victims of indoor air pollution, benefit primarily from the project. Activities In addition to employee training, a new ACE1 model with an integrated payment function via mobile phone (PAYG "pay-as-you-go") will be introduced and delivered for better communication with customers using smartphones. In addition, a legally independent, non-profit fund will be set up to provide at least EUR 105,000 for microcredits to purchase the AC1 outside the project budget.
