Project Notice

PNR 22689
Project Name Nenskra Hydro Power generation
Project Detail Project Period: 2015 ~ 2056 Total budget: 1.1350 trillion KRW Capacity: 280MW Project phase: preceding construction including ramp Nenskra Hydropower Plant Project comprises construction of Nenskra Hydropower Plant (HPP) – the largest strategic hydropower plant in the history of independent Georgia. The project is to be developed by JSC Nenskra Hydro, founded in 2015 as an outcome of cooperation between K-Water, Korea Water Resource Corporation (investor), and JSC Partnership fund. Nenskra HPP with 280 MW of installed capacity will annually provide Georgia with total energy generation of 1200.00 GWh which will be fully consumed by the local energy market. Today Georgia experiences a deficit in electricity supplies in winter, particularly in the period of November-January due to less water available from rivers and increased internal energy consumption. In addition, the percentage of imported electricity increases year after year. Given these conditions, the implementation of the project is of utmost importance for our country; Nenskra HPP construction serves the purpose of eliminating the current energy shortage. In particular, the electricity generated by HPP will guarantee the energy supply needed during the autum-winter season. This will allow Georgia to substantially reduce the imported energy and related expenses, and improve the economy of the region and the country as well. The execution of the project will significantly contribute to the importance of Svaneti region, its prosperity and socio-economic development from the perspective of all the country. These processes will positively impact the life standard of the local population. Given the involvement of the international expert team, the environmental impact of Nenskra hydro power plant will be reduced to the minimum. Nenskra Hydro project is being implemented based on BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model stipulating for transfer of ownership to Georgia 36 years after the HPP is commissioned. The project is planned to be completed in 2021, however the HPP will start producing the electricity in 2020. Nenskra Hydro project is a very important step towards the successful future of Georgia and will allow Georgia and its population an opportunity to strengthen energy safety and security, and improve the economy of the country.
