The Ministry of Infrastructure of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires has launched a public bidding process to build the new headquarters of the Primera Ministera Indira Gandhi Common Primary School and Kindergarten. The building will be located in Block 111A of Barrio 31 in Retiro (Commune 1), between Carlos H. Perette Street, Ruda Passage, Puma Street, and Copihue Passage, adjacent to the Plaza de las Comunidades. The bidding process is scheduled for January 22, 2025. The project includes a building measuring approximately 2,900 square meters and an estimated construction period of 18 months. The official budget amounts to $6.505 billion and seeks to provide a definitive solution to the relocation of the school community from the Costanera Norte site, currently in dispute over land ownership. Meanwhile, students and teachers will begin the school year in a shared building at EII School No. 3 in Constitución. According to the technical specifications, the new building will include eight regular classrooms and four special classrooms spread across the first and second floors, an indoor gymnasium and an outdoor expansion, as well as five kindergarten classrooms and a nursery room on the ground floor. Administrative areas, covered patios, outdoor play areas, a dining room/multi-purpose room, and a kitchen shared between the preschool and primary levels will also be added. The architectural design meets criteria of functionality and construction economy. Standardized construction systems and mass-produced materials will be used to optimize construction time and costs, without sacrificing quality or efficient use of space. Circulation widths, for example, reach 4 meters, allowing for their use as additional educational areas. In terms of orientation and environmental comfort, the classrooms will face northeast to maximize natural lighting and cross-ventilation, incorporating blackout systems to regulate sunlight. The project also prioritizes accessibility and safety: entrances will be visually linked to the administrative areas and directly connected to the adjacent plaza, facilitating access for students and families. Furthermore, the design was confirmed to comply with the Buenos Aires City Building Code, with special attention to regulations specific to the educational sector. Staircases and doorways are provided with larger than minimum dimensions, improving evacuation and internal circulation and allowing for flexible use of common spaces. With this new location, the Buenos Aires City government seeks to definitively resolve the relocation of the Indira Gandhi School and provide it with adequate infrastructure for its current and future enrollment, as part of the redevelopment process of Barrio 31.
