Work Detail On May 25, 2025, at the inaugural UN Global Compact (UNGC) Global Business Summit held in Jakarta, 24 major solar companies from around the world including JA Solar, Jinko Solar, Tongwei, LONGi, and GCL Group jointly announced the launch of the Global Solar Sustainable Alliance (GSSA). This initiative aims to promote sustainability across the entire solar industry value chain. It brings together key upstream suppliers to address pressing social and environmental issues while supporting the global shift toward renewable energy. The summit was attended by prominent leaders from government, industry, and academia. Notable figures included Sanda Ojiambo, UNGC Assistant Secretary-General and CEO; Siddharth Chatterjee, United Nations Resident Coordinator in China; H.E. Luhut B. Pandjaitan, Chairman of Indonesia’s National Economic Council; Ray Dalio, Founder and Co-Chairman of Bridgewater Associates; Bao’an Xin, President of the China Electricity Council; Dong Zhao, Chairman of Xiamen Airlines; and Gongshan Zhu, Founder and Chairman of GCL. Their presence underscored the importance of public-private collaboration in accelerating sustainable development and the energy transition. As the solar industry continues to expand rapidly, it plays a vital role in the global effort to combat climate change and achieve carbon neutrality. The newly launched GSSA is designed to guide the industry towards responsible and inclusive growth. It focuses on key areas such as responsible sourcing of minerals, biodiversity and ecosystem protection, social equity, and broader economic inclusion. The initiative outlines nine specific action points under three core pillars, all aimed at strengthening environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices within the solar sector. At the summit, Jing Li, Vice President of Branding and Sustainability at JA Solar, officially launched the GSSA initiative. She also introduced JA Solar’s new responsible supply chain strategy under the theme “Together Towards Tomorrow.” This strategy calls on all stakeholders across the solar value chain to collaborate in building a more sustainable and resilient industry. The UNGC has encouraged more solar companies and their partners to join the GSSA and support its goals. The initial signatories have committed to developing a practical action roadmap with stakeholder engagement to ensure the initiative is implemented effectively. Through collective effort, the solar industry aims to contribute meaningfully to the summit’s vision of “Better Business, Better World: Accelerating the SDGs.”
