Work Detail Brazils proposal for the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Industry Decarbonization Program (IDP) ranked first among 26 eligible countries. The selection for the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Industry Decarbonization Program (IDP), made by a group of independent experts, placed Brazil at the top of the list of 26 eligible countries for access to CIF financing. The funds will be used to accelerate the decarbonization of emissions-intensive industrial sectors, such as steel, cement, aluminum, and chemicals. The independent report with the full evaluation was published last Thursday (May 22) on the institutions official website. On June 11 and 12, the CIF committee will conduct its final evaluation of the candidate countries. In justifying the scoring of Brazils expression of interest, the international initiative highlighted the National Energy Transition Policy (PNTE), created by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), as one of the determining factors for the strength and credibility of the Brazilian proposal. The PNTE was considered essential for structuring the national industrial decarbonization strategy, aligned with climate goals and long-term public policies. The document highlighted that the Brazilian proposal is technically robust, ambitious, and ready for implementation, presenting a compelling strategic framework, supported by national policy instruments, institutional coordination, and initial private sector engagement. The report also recognized that the Brazilian proposal includes one of the most developed just transition frameworks among all the submissions, with concrete elements for regional development, workforce reskilling, and the promotion of gender equality. In 2024, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) launched a public call for low-carbon hydrogen projects, anticipating the requirements of the IDP and preparing the country to attract new international financing. The call was jointly launched by the MME, the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC), and the Ministry of Finance (MF), with support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the British government. The initiative is a central part of the National Hydrogen Program (NHP2), whose main long-term objective is the establishment of low-carbon hydrogen hubs in the country by 2035. Following the final outcome of the CIF committee in June, the next step will be the development of the investment plan, in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MDIC). This work will be supported by multilateral institutions such as the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and UNIDO.
