Work Detail According to the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (Absolar), the recent announcement of the inclusion of solar generation at the Alvorada Palace in Brasília (DF) reinforces the importance of leading by example in the countrys energy transition and sustainability. More and more public sector consumer units, such as schools, hospitals, police stations, courts, parks, museums, libraries, among others, are adopting their own solar generation. The use of solar energy generation in public buildings has been growing in Brazil, driven by the reduction in electricity costs it brings to public coffers, greater energy autonomy, and the sustainability benefits it brings. According to data from the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (Absolar), the country has more than 15,100 public administration buildings (consumer units) served by photovoltaic technology, including buildings belonging to the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. According to the association, by 2024, 3,500 public buildings—such as schools, hospitals, police stations, courts, parks, museums, libraries, and others—will have adopted their own solar generation, a significant advance compared to previous years. Despite this, solar self-generation still represents a minority of the electricity consumed by the Brazilian public administration. In total, there are more than 435.4 MW of photovoltaic systems installed on rooftops, facades, and small plots of land to supply public buildings. This represents more than 2 billion reais (more than 352 million dollars) in accumulated investments in the technology, responsible for the creation of nearly 13,000 green jobs, spread across Brazils five regions. The installation of these systems has already guaranteed more than 600 million reais in revenue for public coffers. According to Absolars report, more than 9,200 photovoltaic systems are in operation in the country, serving public buildings, installed on-site or on designated land. Currently, public buildings represent only 0.3% of the photovoltaic systems installed in Brazil and 1.2% of the establishments that benefit from them. For the association, the recent announcement of the inclusion of solar generation at the Alvorada Palace, the official residence of the President of Brazil, in Brasilia (DF) , which is expected to save the Federal Government 1 million reais per year, represents an important step in the use of photovoltaic technology by public authorities and reinforces the importance of leading by example in the countrys energy transition and sustainability. “Solar energy is a lever for the countrys social, economic, and environmental development. Its use in public buildings helps reduce electricity costs, strengthens the creation of high-quality local green jobs, and contributes to Brazils sustainability. Therefore, Absolar applauds the Federal Governments initiative to install a solar photovoltaic system at the Alvorada Palace and encourages other public administrators from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches to participate in this global movement to include solar energy in public buildings, benefiting schools, hospitals, health centers, police stations, libraries, museums, and parks, among others,” says Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of Absolar. For Absolars Chairman of the Board of Directors, Ronaldo Koloszuk, in addition to being a competitive and clean energy source, the greater inclusion of solar energy, both in public buildings and in homes and businesses in general, is essential for the country to strengthen its economy and drive the energy transition process. Solar energy is part of this solution and a true engine for generating opportunities, new jobs, savings for public authorities, and income for citizens, he notes.
