India reiterated its strong commitment to global energy security and sustainable development during the BRICS Energy Ministers Meeting held in Brasilia under Brazils 2025 Presidency. Shri Manohar Lai, Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, led the Indian delegation and underscored the urgency of collective action to ensure equitable energy access and stability amid global challenges. Speaking at the high-level meeting, Shri Manohar Lai emphasized that energy security remains one of the most critical concerns of the current era. He called for deeper cooperation among BRICS nations to promote sustainable, inclusive, and resilient energy governance, aligning with the summits theme — Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance. The minister showcased Indias rapid strides in clean energy development, highlighting key achievements such as: A 90% increase in electricity capacity over the past decade, reaching 475 GW in 2025, with a target of 900 GW by 2032. Emergence as the worlds third-largest producer of solar and wind energy. Achievement of 20% ethanol blending, supporting biofuel growth and emissions reduction. Strategic investments in smart grids, advanced metering, and transmission infrastructure, including the Green Energy Corridor. Long-term goals in nuclear and green hydrogen energy, including a 100 GW nuclear target by 2047. Introduction of a domestic Carbon Credit Market to invite global collaboration. Shri Manohar Lai also reaffirmed Indias leadership in energy efficiency through initiatives like the Energy Conservation Sustainable Buildings Code, rooftop solar programs, and performance-based appliance standards. He emphasized the pivotal role of the Global Biofuels Alliance in promoting collaboration in bioenergy. Addressing the broader energy mix, the minister acknowledged the ongoing importance of fossil fuels, especially for developing economies. He advocated for clean usage through advanced technologies such as coal gasification, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and green chemical innovation. Looking ahead, Shri Manohar Lai extended an invitation to BRICS member states to participate in the 2026 BRICS Energy Gathering to be hosted by India, signaling the nations commitment to leading the energy agenda for the Global South. |
