Hitachi Rail will implement cutting-edge digital signalling technology on the Warsaw–Radom railway line, marking a significant step in Poland’s rail modernisation efforts. In collaboration with DP System, Hitachi Rail has signed a contract to install its ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 system on Line 8 – Warsaw–Radom. Valued at PLN 85 million (approximately EUR 20 million), the project is scheduled for completion in December 2027. The upgrade will feature Hitachi Rail’s European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), incorporating the European Train Control System (ETCS), GSM-R communications, and advanced IT technologies. This integrated solution enables continuous data exchange between trains, tracks, and control centres, improving operational efficiency and safety. The system allows trains to run closer together safely, boosting capacity, shortening journey times, and enhancing reliability for passengers and freight operators. Key locations such as Radom, Warka, and Piaseczno will benefit from improved links to Warsaw. Two Radio Block Centres (RBCs) will be installed at Okecie in Warsaw and in Radom, forming the backbone of the ETCS Level 2 deployment. Hitachi Rail’s technology is already in use across nearly 1,500 km of Poland’s railway network. Ongoing commitment to the Polish rail sector Poland remains a strategic market for Hitachi Rail. The company supplies both ETCS Level 1 and Level 2 systems and is currently the sole provider of the ETCS Limited Supervision system in the country. Developed with Polish partners – including the Association of Engineers and Technicians of Communication, Warsaw University of Technology, and the Railway Institute – this system is operational on the Poznan–Wagrowiec route and replaces legacy signalling technologies from the mid-20th century. In 2024 alone, Hitachi commissioned 10 Local Control Stations (LCS), responsible for traffic management on over 512 km of rail. The company has delivered 24 LCS facilities to date, including the highly advanced centre in Bialystok, which manages a 70 km stretch between Czyzew and Bialystok. “Poland is one of the key markets in Europe for Hitachi,” said Pawel Przyzycki, CEO of Hitachi Rail Poland. “Our ambition is to continue growing and to help develop a modern, reliable, digital, and sustainable railway.
