HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), welcomed a high-level academic delegation from South Korea to explore strategic collaboration in the fields of clean energy, hydrogen production, and advanced technologies. The delegation was led by Prof Won-Soo Kim, Rector of the Global Academy for Future Civilisation at Kyung Hee University, and Prof Yeo Hwasoo of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST). Accompanying them were representatives from Korean universities and research centres. Senior DEWA officials present at the meeting included Waleed bin Salman, EVP of Business Development and Excellence; Dr Yousef Al Akraf, EVP of Business Support and Human Resources; and Marwan Bin Haidar, EVP of Innovation and the Future. During the meeting, Al Tayer reaffirmed DEWA’s commitment to the UAE’s national vision under the leadership of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to lead sustainable innovation and position Dubai as a global hub for clean energy. Talks focused on enhancing cooperation in future energy strategies, emerging technologies, and the hydrogen economy, in line with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. Both strategies target 100% clean energy generation for Dubai by 2050. Al Tayer highlighted DEWA’s flagship clean energy project, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park – the world’s largest single-site solar park – which aims for a total capacity of 7,260 MW by 2030. The current operational capacity stands at 3,760 MW, contributing 21% of Dubai’s total power capacity from clean sources. He outlined the progress of Phase 6, scheduled for completion in 2026, and the upcoming Phase 7, expected to launch in 2027. DEWA’s Green Hydrogen project, the first in the MENA region using PEM electrolysers powered by solar energy, currently produces up to 400 kg of hydrogen daily. Other notable projects include the Hatta Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Power Station, capable of providing full grid power within 90 seconds—the first of its kind in the GCC—and Al-Sheraa, DEWA’s upcoming net-positive headquarters, touted as the world’s smartest government building with integrated AI and robotics. Al Tayer noted DEWA’s global performance leadership in 12 key indicators, with electricity and water line losses now at record low levels. DEWA’s total installed power capacity has reached 17,879 MW, with clean energy expected to make up 34% of the mix by 2030—exceeding strategic targets. The partnership with Kyung Hee University and KAIST is expected to enhance joint research, particularly in artificial intelligence, smart grid technologies, and energy policy frameworks, further reinforcing Dubai’s position at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. |
