National Public Tender No. 1/2025, for the structural rehabilitation of runway 02-20 at the Rosario Islas Malvinas International Airport. The project, promoted by the National Airport System Regulatory Agency (ORSNA) in conjunction with the local airport, includes an official investment of $41.616 billion (VAT included, starting January 2025) and a completion period of 180 calendar days. Although the project was initially planned to be carried out in three stages to maintain some air operations, it was ultimately decided to completely close the runway from September 1 to December 12, 2025. During this period, no flights will be permitted, except for helicopters, which may operate from designated areas of the commercial or industrial apron. Technical characteristics of the work The reconstruction project includes: Complete restructuring of the pavement of the 3,100 meters of runway. New safety lanes and RESA (Runway End Safety Area) zones at both ends. Complete installation of the new beacon system, using state-of-the-art LED technology. Final marking of thresholds and contact points. Improvements to Taxiway Bravo and surrounding operational areas. During the initial stages, work had been planned with threshold displacement to keep category C aircraft (Boeing 737, Airbus A320) in operation, but the operational complexity and associated risks led to the decision to carry out the work without active commercial flights. Operational and Strategic Impact The project is key to the airports future, as the current pavement shows significant structural wear, limiting the ability to accommodate larger aircraft or incorporate new routes. Once completed, the new runway will not only improve safety and operations, but also position Rosario Airport as a competitive alternative to other terminals in the region. The temporary closure will require the rescheduling or diverting of all commercial and medical flights to nearby airports, such as Rosario Fisherton, Paraná, Santa Fe, and Córdoba. Special coordination between the control tower, construction personnel, and aviation authorities is planned to ensure safety in the airport environment during the project. This is considered the most important project in decades for the Rosario airport, even surpassing the construction of the new terminal. The renovated runway will be the essential pillar for its future projection, allowing it to receive international flights with greater capacity, improve logistics services and boost regional development.
