Work Detail The budget cancels funding for renewable energy, carbon capture, electric vehicle programs, and more. The Trump administration submitted its fiscal year 2026 budget proposal to Congress , recommending more than $163 billion in federal spending and cutting non-military spending by 20%. Approximately 10% of the proposed cuts are related to clean energy and climate-related funding. According to the White House, the budget cuts $15 billion in funding from the Green New Deal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. It also cuts another $6 billion from electric vehicle financing programs. The budget redirects Department of Energy funding toward research and development of technologies that could produce an abundance of domestic fossil energy and critical minerals, innovative concepts for nuclear reactors and advanced nuclear fuels, and technologies that promote firm baseload power, the White House said in a press briefing. A White House document titled Ending the Green New Scam says the proposed cuts also include: Eliminate the Global Environment Facility and Climate Investment Funds Cut environmental justice programs Cut Environmental Protection Agency grants to non-governmental organizations Cut $1.3 billion in climate research funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cut $2.5 billion (74%) from the Department of Energys (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) program Reduce funding for the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) Cut $80 million from Interior Department renewable energy programs, including funding for offshore wind energy. Cut Bureau of Land Management conservation programs and related climate education funding. Eliminate the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The proposed budget cuts include a nearly 55% reduction in EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) funding compared to 2025 levels. It cuts overall Department of Energy funding by approximately 9%, including a 25% increase in funding for the National Nuclear Security Administration. This is a momentous occasion in American history: Thanks to President Trumps leadership, the Department of Energy has the opportunity to help the nation restore energy dominance, lead the world in innovation, and modernize our nuclear weapons arsenals, said U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. The Executives budget proposals are not laws, but they serve as a guide for negotiations in Congress. “Donald Trump has one agenda: to make life harder for families while handing Elon Musk and his billionaire friends a tax cut,” said Congresswoman Katherine Clark, the Democratic leader. “Today, he’s doubling down with a budget that will make childcare, home energy, and housing more expensive for the very people struggling to pay their bills.”
