Work Detail The Buenos Aires City Government has launched a public tender for the construction of the Ramal Castañón (Castañón Branch), a key project to mitigate flooding in the Villa Soldati neighborhood, Commune 8. The project is part of the San Pedrito Stream drainage system, part of the Erezcano basin, and has an official budget of $4,922,332,554, according to the Buenos Aires Official Gazette. The main route of the branch will run along Castañón Street, between Itaquí and Francisco Rabanal Avenue, with an additional section along General Rivera Fructuoso Street. There, it will connect to the M9 system, which runs along San Pedrito Street, improving stormwater runoff and reducing the risk of flooding in a historically affected area. The project responds to recent neighborhood complaints about flooding exceeding 25 cm (10 inches) in surface water during rainfall events that have been occurring for more than 10 years. This situation prompted the incorporation of the Castañón Branch as a complementary project to the San Pedrito Relief project, within the framework of the Citys Water Management Master Plan (PDOH) and the technical guidelines of the General Directorate of Rainwater Management (DGPRO). From a technical perspective, the main conduit will be rectangular in section, measuring 3.20 meters at the base by 1.50 meters high, and will extend for approximately 834 linear meters. Along its route, it will receive a 126-meter tributary conduit from Rivera Fructuoso Street, with identical dimensions, which will be integrated at the intersection with Castañón Street. Both structures will flow into a pre-existing manhole on Rabanal Boulevard, where a previously constructed section begins that connects to the San Pedrito Overflow Pipeline. This existing system consists of two additional sections: one 113 meters long over Rabanal Avenue and another 94.5 meters long over San Pedrito Street, both similar in size to the new branch and designed to channel water flow to the Riachuelo. The completed project will strengthen the local stormwater systems transport capacity, improve its response to heavy rains, and protect thousands of Soldati residents.
