US renewables developer-operator Swift Current Energy has energised its 593-MWac/800-MWdc Double Black Diamond Solar park in Illinois, a project backed with tax equity by search engine giant Google. The project’s completion was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Swift Current Energy said on Wednesday. Located 30 miles (48 km) west of Springfield, the photovoltaic (PV) complex is the largest solar site east of the Mississippi River. It is equipped with 1.6 million First Solar modules, most of which made in Ohio, and solar trackers from Nextracker. The annual generation of the plant is expected to be enough to cover the consumption of around 100,000 homes. The City of Chicago and seven other customers are buying Double Black Diamond’s output through contracts with Constellation NewEnergy Inc. The PV farm is responsible for producing power for around 70% of the facilities in Chicago, including OHare and Midway airports. Construction financing for the project, which Swift Current Energy started developing in 2018, was arranged with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Societe Generale, Truist and eight other lenders. McCarthy Building Companies Inc acted as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. |
