This represents $28 million for the project being carried out by E-QUATOR Energy SA, a holding company formed equally by Gransolar and TotalEnergies, for the development of a photovoltaic plant on Baltra Island. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), through its private sector arm, IDB Invest, has accepted for financial analysis the Conolophus project for a loan. This project proposes the development of a 14.8 MWp photovoltaic plant on Baltra Island in the Ecuadorian archipelago of the Galapagos Islands, along with a 40.9 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). Conolophus is an initiative of E-Quator Energy, a holding company formed equally by Gransolar and TotalEnergies . The project was awarded in September 2021 through a public selection process promoted by Ecuadors Ministry of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources. Other planned tasks include the construction of a 34.5 kV substation and transmission infrastructure of approximately 44 km. Also included is a microgrid integrating current and future diesel, wind, and solar generation, along with distribution and storage systems. The project is scheduled to be submitted to the IDB Invest Board of Directors for approval on November 10. Currently, approximately 2% of electricity consumption in the Galapagos Islands relies heavily on fossil fuels. With the implementation of the Conolophus project, the share of renewable energy in local electricity consumption is expected to increase to 70% and significantly reduce dependence on diesel. The archipelagos electricity generation matrix is ??composed of approximately 75% fossil fuel-based generation, while the remaining 25% comes from renewable sources (14% wind and 11% solar). |
