Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) through the World University Association for Community Development (WUACD), has launched a community service initiative aimed at supporting agricultural sustainability in Licin District, Banyuwangi Regency. The initiative, conducted under UNAIR’s Community Service (KKN) Equivalency Program, focuses on equipping local farmers with knowledge on assembling and utilizing solar panels to power automated irrigation systems. The technology, which has already been implemented in Jelun Village and Banjar Village, is expected to enhance soil fertility while lowering electricity costs. Muhammad Aiman, a student from UTM, said the adoption of solar energy in farming operations offers a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional electricity. “The local community has responded very positively. They value the technology for its role in reducing dependence on costly conventional electricity,” he said. Beyond agricultural support, the program also featured a creative workshop for children in Banjar Village. During the session, guided by students from both UNAIR and UTM, children learned to weave bracelets—a skill-building activity that was met with enthusiasm and active participation. “The children were excited to showcase their creations, and the activity was warmly welcomed by village officials and residents,” Aiman added. The initiative reflects a broader effort by both universities to foster not only technological innovation but also creative and skill-based development in rural communities. “This program has given me valuable experience in helping communities become more self-sufficient through technology,” Aiman noted. “It demonstrates how international collaboration can deliver meaningful, multi-dimensional impacts on local development.” The UNAIR-UTM partnership under WUACD continues to promote sustainable community solutions across Southeast Asia, combining renewable energy, education, and hands-on skills training. |
