The City of Buenos Aires has begun a key enhancement project for the historic center of Mataderos , near the former Hacienda Market. This urban and heritage project covers 12,200 m² and will benefit more than 13,000 residents and visitors , with improvements to public spaces, increased security, and more green space. The works, promoted by the Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene, are being carried out on Avenida de los Corrales and the traditional Plazoleta El Resero , a landmark in the neighborhood. A green corridor will be built there, which will involve widening the boulevard , creating 1,044 m² of new green space , adding street furniture, and improving pedestrian traffic conditions. In detail, the plan includes the installation of 44 pedestrian streetlights with a design in keeping with the historic style of the area, 16 new benches , and the planting of 17 trees and species such as banana, Paraguayan boldo, blue sage, and Dietes vegeta. Sidewalk repairs , repaving of roads , filling of empty flowerbeds with vegetation , and the installation of bollards will also be carried out to improve pedestrian safety . This area gained renewed urban value after the closure of the Mercado de Hacienda (Treasury Market) in 2022, which had operated for 121 years. Since then, the site was used as a vehicle storage facility, and its surroundings had been neglected. This project aims to enhance the areas value and strengthen its cultural and heritage identity , especially around the traditional Mataderos Fair , which continues to operate on weekends. The project is part of a comprehensive urban development plan for the south of the city , which also includes neighborhoods such as La Boca, Barracas, Nueva Pompeya, Villa Riachuelo, Soldati, and Lugano. The goal is to provide these areas with improved infrastructure, improved environmental quality, and inclusive and sustainable public spaces, fully integrating them into metropolitan development. |
