Work Detail Tata Power, India’s largest integrated power utility, has received approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to install a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai over the next two years. The move aims to enhance the city’s power reliability, enable renewable energy integration, and optimize electricity costs for consumers. The state-of-the-art BESS will feature advanced ‘black start’ capabilities to rapidly restore power to critical infrastructure such as the metro, hospitals, airport, and data centers in the event of grid disturbances. The system is also designed to manage peak demand efficiently, support reactive power balancing, and reduce dependency on expensive power purchases during high-demand periods. Strategically located across 10 sites near key load centers in Mumbai, the entire system will be centrally monitored and controlled from Tata Powers Power System Control Center (PSCC). The storage units will contribute to reduced power tariffs by storing electricity during off-peak hours and releasing it during peak periods, while also deferring the need for costly infrastructure upgrades. Additionally, the BESS will offer grid-stabilizing ancillary services such as frequency regulation and voltage support. It will also improve the utilization of solar energy by storing surplus daytime generation for use during peak hours, thereby supporting Mumbai’s transition to a cleaner energy mix. Tata Power plans to integrate the BESS with its Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) for improved operational efficiency. The system is designed with three-tier safety features including temperature monitoring and fire suppression at the cell, module, and rack levels. This initiative aligns with Tata Power’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and reliable energy delivery, reinforcing its role as a key enabler in India’s green energy transition.
