PNN 95115
Work Detail The Nancy Administrative Court of Appeal in France has annulled the permit for a 226-MW wind project proposed by EDF Renewables and Renner Energies due to concerns over its potential visual impact. The decision cancels the authorisation granted by the Ardennes department in the summer of 2017, which was challenged by local residents in the Administrative Court of Chalons-en-Champagne. The Court of Appeal has ruled out that the 200-metre-high turbines of the wind park would have high visibility and none of the proposed measures would be enough to mitigate the negative effects on the landscape. EDF Renewables and Renner Energies, formerly Windvision, intended to build the 63-turbine Mont des Quatre Faux wind farm near Rethel, in the Ardennes department of the northeastern Grand Est region. According to the court, the development would be located on a “vast plateau composed of sparsely wooded agricultural land with wide views and few visual obstacles”. The developers’ plan was to generate electricity in volumes equal to the consumption of around 250,000 people from the proposed wind park. Their project, which called for an investment of EUR 250 million (USD 274m), emerged among the winners in an onshore wind subsidy auction in France in 2021. (EUR 1.0 = USD 1.096)
