Work Detail JA SOLAR, a leading PV module manufacturer, has partnered with renowned football club Borussia Dortmund to install a groundbreaking photovoltaic system on the roof of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, setting the stage for the world’s largest solar system on a stadium roof. Known for attracting the highest average match attendance in European football, the stadium will now also stand as a symbol of sustainable innovation. A Commitment to Sustainability and Excellence The collaboration between JA SOLAR and Borussia Dortmund is built on shared values of integrity, respect, and a commitment to sustainable solutions. This new installation in Dortmund underscores JA SOLAR’s commitment to decarbonization, delivering high-quality products that align with both companies’ long-term environmental goals. The project will generate reliable green electricity for the next 30 years, reinforcing the shared vision of both partners to contribute to the energy transition. This initiative also highlights JA SOLAR’s dedication to expanding its footprint in the European PV market. A Powerful Combination of Energy and Passion SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, home to the iconic “Yellow Wall,” will now harness the power of JA SOLAR’s highly efficient Full-Black modules, creating a unique synergy between the club’s legendary colours and cutting-edge technology. This project sets a new benchmark for stadium energy sustainability, demonstrating that JA SOLAR’s sleek black modules, widely admired for their aesthetic appeal on residential rooftops, are equally effective for commercial installations. Carsten Cramer, Managing Director of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA said, “We are very pleased about the partnership with JA SOLAR, which will play a key role in the planned renovation of the photovoltaic system on the roof of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. This collaboration underlines our commitment to sustainability and innovative technologies. With JA SOLAR’s modules, which will power the largest photovoltaic system on any stadium roof, we are setting the course for a more environmentally friendly future.” Henning Schulze, Vice President JA SOLAR added, “We believe that Borussia Dortmund and JA SOLARshare many common values, and we are really proud that our modules are to be used for this project at this iconic stadium. In times of rapid political change and market disruption, our participation in this project is a clear statement from JA SOLAR that we are here to stay.” Sustainable Impact and Future Benefits More than 11,000 Full-Black modules will be installed on the stadium roof, generating over 4 GWh of green electricity annually, which will be used for Borussia Dortmund’s own energy needs. This project will reduce the club’s CO2 emissions by approximately 1,800 tons per year, while enhancing the stadium’s energy resilience and security. To put this into perspective, the solar energy generated could power the stadium’s floodlights for 1,000 matches each year. Installation Timeline and Future Prospects Installation of the PV system is set to begin in summer 2025, with completion anticipated by the end of the same year. This project serves as an inspiring example for other organizations, showcasing the potential of large-scale solar installations to drive sustainability and reduce carbon footprints.
