Work Detail The National Electricity Plan-Transmission outlines the transmission system that needs to be added in India from 2023 to 2032. This plan is designed to match the growing electricity demand and the expected increase in generation capacity. The transmission network will include both central and state transmission systems at 220 kV level and above. By 2032, the country’s peak electricity demand is projected to reach 388 GW, and the plan aims to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to meet this requirement. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) lines have been planned to enable the bulk transfer of power across long distances. These lines will primarily be used to transport electricity from renewable energy-rich regions to major load centers. Since natural resources for power generation are unevenly distributed, some states have significant renewable energy potential, while others have abundant hydroelectric resources. To balance the supply across the country, the inter-regional transfer capacity will increase from 119 GW to 168 GW by 2032. This will help states with surplus power transfer electricity to those facing a deficit, ensuring a stable supply across all regions. The plan also focuses on establishing a transmission network for evacuating power from major renewable energy zones. A key component of this strategy is supporting the transmission of power to Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia manufacturing hubs. These clean energy industries are expected to play a crucial role in India’s energy transition. Several transmission projects related to the integration of renewable energy sources and power delivery to Green Hydrogen hubs are currently at different stages of implementation. The expansion of India’s transmission infrastructure is critical for supporting the growing demand for electricity and integrating more renewable energy into the grid. The plan aims to create a seamless, efficient, and reliable power transfer system that supports the country’s clean energy goals while ensuring stable electricity supply across regions.
