Work Detail A giant crane towered above a construction site on West Range Road on Thursday as Fort Hood Department of Public Works engineers and officials supervised the construction of a new bridge over House Creek, a low-water crossing outside the west entrance of post.
“A year and a half ago, DPW officials determined that the bridge on West Range Road needed to be replaced due to issues of structural integrity,” said John Burrow, chief of DPW’s Engineering and Services Division. After appropriating the necessary funds for the new bridge — $3.9 million — engineers designed the new structure to be 20 feet higher than its predecessor for safety purposes, Burrow said.
“Repair just wasn’t feasible, but this will allow tactical vehicles to cross the bridge safely in storm situations,” he said. “It will also reduce travel time for personnel who commute from Gatesville, who currently have to access post from Georgetown and East Range Roads taking them an extra 20-25 minutes out of their way. We are hoping to have the bridge completed by December of this year.”
In addition to the House Creek Bridge, $6.9 million will go towards building a similar structure over Cowhouse Creek at Jackson Crossing once funding has been awarded, possibly by the end of the next fiscal year, Burrow said.
The water level at Owl Creek — the site of an accident June 2 where a military vehicle overturned in a flash flood, killing nine soldiers, including a U.S. Military Academy at West Point cadet — is typically much lower than other low-water crossings on post, he said, adding that “Fort Hood will continue to look into low-water crossings” for safety reasons.
The Army has not yet released the accident reports for the June 2 truck crash or last November’s Black Hawk helicopter crash, which killed four soldiers in a training area in a northern part of the post.
