The government of Morocco has approved MAD 319 billion (USD 32.7bn/EUR 30.3bn) worth of green hydrogen projects for use in the production of ammonia, industrial fuel and green steel. Six projects proposed by five developers were picked by a committee responsible for Morocco’s Hydrogen Offer, the government announced on Thursday and said negotiations are due to be held with the selected proponents. The list of awardees is headed by US-based Ortus, Spanish conglomerate Acciona SA and German wind turbine maker Nordex SE (ETR:NDX1). Through their ORNX consortium, they plan to produce green ammonia. Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA) and Spanish petroleum company Cepsa, which recently changed its name to Moeve, will produce ammonia and industrial fuel, while a similar plan was launched by Moroccos Nareva to produce ammonia, fuel and green steel. Saudi Arabias ACWA Power Co (TADAWUL:2082) will make green steel, while Chinese firms UEG and China Three Gorges have teamed up to produce ammonia. Morocco will offer each of these projects up to 30,000 ha (74,132 acres) of land, provided that a preliminary agreement is signed. The schemes will be executed in the three southern regions of the Kingdom. Late in 2024, a joint venture of TotalEnergies (EPA:TTE) and EREN Groupe, together with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and a unit of investment firm A.P. Moller Holding signed a preliminary contract for land reservation for a 1-GW green energy project in Morocco. The proposed complex is planned to integrate onshore wind and solar for hydrogen-to-ammonia production. (MAD 1.0 = USD 0.103/EUR 0.949) |
