Work Detail IRONTON - Ohio University Southern is now registering for its fall semester community education classes.

There is something for everyone in this classes, which range from exercise and athletics to history, computer science, arts and crafts and more.

Community education classes are open to the general public regardless of educational background. The classes are self-supporting, meaning the fees cover all instructional, administrative and overhead costs of the program.

Pre-registration is essential, as classes that don't meet minimum enrollment are subject to cancellation.

OUS also two "community roadtrips" planned.

Here are the fall classes:

The Southern Bobcat Wiffle Ball Classic: Explore the official rules, hitting, pitching, setting lineups and fielding positions, and keeping score, then split into teams and play a few games. On our second meeting, you should come ready to play. We'll play two or more games and/or a tournament based on the number of participants. This course is designed for men, women, and folks of all ages. Please be sure to wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes. All other supplies will be provided. Instructor: Randy Bazell. Location: OUS Riffe Rotunda & Front Green. Dates: noon-4 p.m. Oct. 15 and 22. Cost: $25.

Dog Obedience - Puppy Kindergarten: The owner and puppy learn the basics of dog obedience at a more relaxed pace. Sit, stay, come, lie down, and good manners are the focus of this puppy class. Positive reinforcement, praise, and good parenting are emphasized. Do not bring the dog to the first session. Instructor: Leslie Milleson. Location: Ohio Horse Park/Vet Clinic Area Course. When: 6:30-7:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 20-Nov. 8. Cost: $70

Dog Obedience - Sub Novice: This is an on-leash course for owners to learn how to train dogs 7 months or older. All the basics are covered: sit, stay, come, stand, lie down, and heel. This class is based on positive reinforcement and working on getting your dog's attention and trust. Puppy kindergarten is not required. Do not bring dog to first session. Instructor: Leslie Milleson. Location: Ohio Horse Park/Vet Clinic Area. When: 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 20-Nov. 8. Cost: $85.

Dog Obedience - Novice: This course moves forward in the obedience training to off-leash work. This is done with all the commands. The Sub-Novice class is required or participants must have permission from the instructor. Do not bring dog to first session. Instructor: Leslie Milleson. Location: Ohio Horse Park/Vet Clinic Area. When: 8:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 20-Nov. 8. Cost: $85.

Paranormal Phenomena and Local Mysteries: This course includes a guided discussion focused on popular facets of the paranormal field and local interests of a similar nature. It is intended to stimulate one's own familiarity with current ideas in the research of fringe subjects. Students will be introduced to new concepts that they may not normally consider. Instructor: Todd Martin. Location: OUS. When: 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 4-25. Cost: $35.

Technology File Management: Discover the most convenient way to store all of the documents, music, pictures, and videos on your computer. You will learn why your computer decides to store files in specific locations, how to create new files and folders, as well as how to move or make copies of your files. Instructor: Randy Bazell. Location: OUS Academic 214. When: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8. Cost: $20.

Introduction to Word Online: Learn basic word processing. Learn how to create, format, and edit documents. You will also learn how to use basic templates, and how to insert pictures, page numbering, and hyperlinks. Instructor: Mary Lou Malone. Location: Academic 214. When:7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15. Cost: $20.

Introduction to Excel Online: Learn how to create electronic spreadsheets. Discover how to: setup your spreadsheet, use formulas, create charts, format, edit, print, and use functions in an electronic spreadsheet. Instructor: Mary Lou Malone. Location: OUS Academic 214. When: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. Cost: $20.

Tablets and Mobile Devices: Find out how you can get the most out of your tablet or smartphone. Learn the basics, like how to navigate on your device, download apps, install your apps, take pictures, record videos, create new contacts, and a host of other features. Instructors: Randy Bazell and Mike Donley. Location: OUS Academic 214. When: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29. Cost: $20.

Pictures to Videos: Take your collection of pictures to an entirely new level by turning them into videos. You'll learn to bring your pictures together in a variety of creative ways by adding titles, credits, music, and different types of transitions using computer software to create videos. Instructor: Mary Lou Malone. Location: OUS Academic 214. When: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. Cost: $20.

Photo Editing: Learn basic photo editing skills and the software functions necessary to perform touch-up techniques, improve color and tone, modify the contrast and sharpness of images, cropping techniques, as well as other fascinating creative features to improve your images. Instructor: Mike Donley. Location: OUS Academic 214. When: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. Cost: $20.

Social Media: Learn different social media. Instructors: Randy Bazell and Mike Donley. Location: Academic 214. When: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20. Cost: $20.

Connecting through Technology: Discover some of the most popular methods of connecting with your friends, family, or other acquaintances anywhere in the world through the use of computer software and mobile applications. Instructors: Randy Bazell and Mike Donley. Location: OUS Academic 214. When: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. Cost: $20

Personal Finance: All classes will be $10 and held in the Caucus Room, Academic Center. Taught by Deanna Patrick, financial advisor.

n Social Security: Your Questions Answered: Learn ways to maximize Social Security benefit amounts for the individual and spouse based on age, life expectancy, employment and need. When: 7-8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20.

n Five Money Questions for Women: Get a perspective on a process women can use to identify financial goals and set a strategy. Discusses Rule of 72, systematic investing, employer-sponsored retirement plans and IRAs as strategies for saving. When: 7-8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.

n Foundations of Investing: Learn the basic rules for investing - develop a strategy, choose quality investments, diversify portfolio, invest for the long term and focus on what you can control. When: 7-8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1.

n Retirement by Design: Presents the need to define retirement goals, determine savings needed to reach those goals (using the rule of 25) and how to use the power of 3 (time/money/return) to reach those goals. When: 7-8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Wreaths: All classes will be $25 (includes supplies) and held in the Caucus Room, Academic Center. Taught by Dave Bush, retired floral designer. Register at least a week in advance.

n Ribbons, Bows, and Packaging: Add your own personal touch to packages, wreaths, and swags for friends and family by learning to make your own beautiful hand-tied bows and ribbons. We will be learning how to do both wired and non-wired ribbon. 6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28.

n Fall Wreath: Keep your home festive this autumn by learning to craft your own beautiful Fall Grapevine Wreath using a variety of materials such as dried flowers, silks, and fall foliage. 6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5.

n Holiday Wreath: Discover clever ways to express your creative side this yuletide season by learning to craft a Holiday Wreath using seasonal materials such as dried flowers, silks and ornamentation. 6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Painting: All classes will be $59, which includes supplies. Taught by OUS senior art student Megan Cox in OUS Dingus 125. Register at least a week in advance.

n Introduction to Painting I: This course is designed for those most absolute beginners who are interested in a fun and informal introduction into the art of painting. Students will engage their inner creativity through simple, therapeutic exercises while exploring fundamental principles and techniques. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 26-Oct. 10.

n Introduction to Painting II: This course is designed for those who are interested in a fun and informal introduction into the art of painting. Students will engage their inner creativity through additional simple, therapeutic exercises while exploring fundamental principles and techniques. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 24-Nov. 7.

n Introduction to Painting III: This course is designed for those who are interested in a fun and informal introduction into the art of painting. Students will engage their inner creativity through additional simple, therapeutic exercises while further exploring fundamental principles and techniques. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 21-Dec. 5.

Guitar: Classes are $49. Taught by Catherine Cirner at OUS Campus and Community Center. Bring own acoustic guitar.

n Introductory Guitar I: Students will learn rudimentary theory pertaining to chord structure, basic chords, and rhythm strumming. Students will learn to read tablature and recognize chord structure which will enable them to play their favorite songs. 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 21-Oct. 26.

n Introductory Guitar II: Students will apply basic theory, chord structure and strumming technique, to learn new songs. They will also learn how to play songs with others in a group. This class will refine basic technique and enable students to learn their favorite songs. 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Nov. 2-Dec. 14 (no class on Nov. 23).

Basket Weaving: Classes are $30, which includes supplies. Taught by Martha Evans in the Caucus Room, Academic Building. Register at least two weeks in advance.

n Muffin Basket: Learn the basics of basket weaving while making a basket roughly 8"x10" and four inches high, from dyed or natural reed. Students choose whether their basket is plain or has color accents. 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20.

n Bean Pot Basket: Learn how to use a continuous basket weaving technique with a separate handle added near completion. Students will make a swing-handle bean-pot basket that is roughly 7" across the top and about 7" tall. 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3.

OUS Community Chorus: The OUS Community Chorus is a non-audition choral ensemble open to everyone in our community that loves to sing. Instructor: Rhonda Pemberton. 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 27-Dec. 6. OUS Campus and Community Building. Cost: $35.
