Work Detail The Chinese manufacturer said its new i-TOPCon Ultra panel is part of the Vertex N family and is intended for applications in utility-scale projects. It plans to begin mass production of the new modules in the second quarter of 2025, with an initial annual capacity of 10 GW. Chinese PV module manufacturer Trina Solar has unveiled a new solar module based on tunnel oxide passivated contact cell (TOPCon) technology during the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) Annual Conference 2024. The new i-TOPCon Ultra series of panels is part of the Vertex N family and is designed for large-scale project applications. The module has a power of 760W and a power conversion efficiency of 24.5%. “The module has a bifaciality factor of 90% and a temperature coefficient of -0.28%/C,” said Zhang Yingbin, head of global product strategy at Trina Solar, during the introduction of the new product. “The degradation rate in the first year is 1% and the annual degradation is 0.4%.” The company said the new module is particularly suited to low irradiance environments, ensuring reliable performance under varying conditions. It plans to start mass production of the new modules in the second quarter of 2025, with an initial annual capacity of 10 GW. The new series will also include a 670W panel for C&I projects and a 495W product for residential PV. “This new development demonstrates a historic leap in TOPCon technology, with the photovoltaic industry entering the TOPCon 2.0 era,” Zhang said, without giving further details about the new modules. In a recent interview with pv magazine , Zhang said the company aims to achieve efficiency above 26% for TOPCon cells by 2027. However, in late November, Trina said it had achieved 26.58% efficiency for its large-area industrial TOPCon solar cell, and Germany’s Institute for Solar Energy Research in Hamelin (ISFH CalTeC) confirmed the result. Earlier in April, Trina stated that its n-type i-TOPCon solar module for large-scale PV project applications achieved a power output of 740.6 W, and Germanys TÜV SUD confirmed the results.
