State-owned power utility Hydro Tasmania has clinched a deal to offtake electricity from what will be Tasmania’s largest photovoltaic (PV) farm, a 288-MW plant expected to go live in 2027.The power purchase agreement (PPA) covers the entire output of the Northern Midlands solar project owned by TasRex and calling for an investment of some AUD 500 million (USD 325m/EUR 308.9m), Hydro Tasmania said on Monday. The Northern Midlands Solar Farm is set to be installed on existing farmland in the small town of Cressy, 35 km (22 mi) southwest of Launceston. The plant will be equipped with 670,000 PV panels and will be coupled with a battery energy storage system (BESS). Once up and running, it will be able to generate enough electricity to meet the demand of around 70,000 homes. The project, which aims to back Tasmania’s goal for 200% of renewables generation by 2040, also envisages the construction of a new 220-kV transmission line. “The deal gives TasRex the confidence to proceed with this major development and deliver an important new source of renewable energy to help power Tasmanian homes and businesses,” said Hydro Tasmania’s acting CEO Erin van Maanen.
