Work Detail Defense contracts awarded in August reflect the varied work ongoing at Newport News Shipbuilding and its sister shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss.

Parent company Huntington Ingalls Industries received defense funds for work on six projects, from modernizing existing ships to planning for those on the drawing board. The six were split between HII's two divisions, Newport News Shipbuilding and Ingalls Shipbuilding on the Gulf Coast. In all but one case, the money represented add-ons to previously awarded contracts.

The information comes from the Defense Department, which lists contract awards of $7 million or greater on its website every business day.

At Newport News, HII received $20 million for work on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which is nearing the end of a mid-life overhaul. Another award, not to exceed $65.3 million, went for purchase of materials for the future USS Enterprise, the third Ford-class carrier now in the early stages.

Finally, the Navy awarded $52.3 million for Newport News shipbuilders to upgrade the USS Harry S. Truman. The aircraft carrier entered Norfolk Naval Shipyard last month for what is expected to be 10 months of work. The project will officially begin Sept. 27, according to a news release from Naval Sea Systems Command.

Down on the Gulf Coast, Ingalls received $102 million as part of a previously awarded contract for work that includes modernization and maintenance of older Ticonderoga-class cruisers. It also received a $13.7 million add-on to an earlier contract for design work on the LX(R), an as-yet-unnamed new class of amphibious warship.

The third award is for $30.3 million. It is related to a radar upgrade for Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
