Work Detail The Berlin Borough Council has awarded three contracts for excavation and electric work that should be the last major expense in the municipality’s ongoing multimillion-dollar generation project.

The work includes excavating and bringing electric infrastructure to the site of the generation project below 5th Avenue and Vine Street.

During a special meeting Tuesday, the council awarded a $15,000 excavation contract to Fogle Construction, of Berlin, and $127,800 and $37,850 contracts to Wiedenhoft Electric, of Boswell, for electrical work.

The council also opted to approve $3,768 and $1,170 worth of cable and termination upgrades for the Wiedenhoft contracts.

The borough received a total of seven bids for all of the contracts. The council had previously awarded a $2.23 million contract to PowerSecure, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, to build the generators and install them.

Borough secretary Tom Jones has estimated that the total cost of the project will be about $2.52 million.

Construction for the generation site is scheduled to begin this month. The generators should be in place and operational by Dec. 1, PowerSecure public utilities Vice President Robert Tugwell has said.

For the past two years the council has been working to bring 3.75 megawatts of electrical generation to the borough. The generators can be turned on during high energy consumption hours to cut down on electric costs, which are set to skyrocket in coming years, some council members contend.

The borough operates its own electric system. It buys power from American Municipal Power, of Ohio, and then distributes it to its customers.
