| Work Detail | Construction will most likely begin this week on a taxiway at the Sedalia Regional Airport after the Sedalia City Council approved the project during Monday night’s meeting. Council approved bids and an ordinance approving and accepting an agreement with Emery Sapp & Sons Inc. for the reconstruction and widening of the apron connecting the taxiway, replacement of the MITL system, replacement of damaged drain pipe and end section and regrading of the Runway 18-36 safety area at the airport. Council also approved an ordinance allowing H.W. Lochner to oversee the construction work for the city. According to information in the meeting packet, the city is responsible for 10 percent of the cost, which is $36,046.46. The remaining portion is funded through a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration. Airport Director John Evans said the city receives an Airport Improvement Plan, which includes $150,000, every year and the city can save up to three years to apply to one project. Crews will reconstruct a portion of the concrete taxiway, with another portion being replaced next summer. This year, the project also includes fixing a drain pipe. Evans said the pipe is 12 feet below the ground, so city crews are unable to repair it. “We have a drain pipe on the south end that runs between the runway and taxi lane. Where it connected it was a six-inch pipe and it blew apart, I think during the (2014 runway) construction it probably got stopped up and when it opened it (broke),” Evans told the Democrat during an interview Friday. The project also includes replacing Runway End Identifier Lights with LED versions. Evans said that when the runway lights were replaced during the 2014 project, the FAA was just starting to approve LED usage at airports. To help save money, as remaining lights burn out, they will be replaced with LED. “They left the lights during the last construction and they’re having problems. It was more money to repair them than it was to replace them, and they’re going to be replaced with state-of-the-art LED,” Evans explained. “Normally at the end, you’ve got a box and it has what looks like a headlight bulb and it strobes so (pilots) coming in can see it. I just saw the new one (while at a conference). It’s the same size and it has about 20 little bulbs and it’s LED. .. They can stay on 24/7 and not use as much electricity as this one is now.” Evans said the work is expected to only take about three weeks, although the lights may not be replaced right away as they have been ordered but not received. During the meeting council also: • Approved an ordinance approving and accepting an agreement with Gaskin Hill Norcross of Missouri Inc. for architectural services relating to the construction of a new Sedalia Police Department Headquarters and renovations to select areas of the Sedalia Municipal Building. • Approved an ordinance amending Ordinance No. 9940 relating to amending a classification and job description for Police Officer for SPD and adding a classification and job description for Police Recruit. • Approved an ordinance amending Section 7.15(C) (controlled substance and alcohol testing policy applicability) of the city’s Personnel Regulations Manual by adding the title of Police Recruit for SPD to the employee positions designated as safety sensitive. • Approved an ordinance amending Section 48-53 of the city’s Code of Ordinances by included a reduced fee for recycling services in all K-12 schools located within the corporate city limits of Sedalia and incorporating all said fees in the city’s Fee Schedule. • Approved an ordinance repealing Ordinance 10478 and amending Section 48-49(E) of the Code of Ordinances by establishing pick-up on demand services and an optional yard waste collection and associated fee and incorporating said fee into the Fee Schedule. • Approved an ordinance approving and accepting a refund agreement with Waste Corporation of Missouri LLC for repayment in full of sewer fees overpaid. • Approved a bid from Schultz Wrecking for $4,500 for the demolition of the structure at 2500 E. Seventh St. |
