Work Detail Construction on The Turtle Meeting Place, the second of four aboriginal-themed landscape formations planned along the Red Hill Valley Trail, is expected to start this fall.

The trail already has The Bear Meeting Place, opened in 2014, which is encountered following a .75 km walk southward from the Mount Albion trail entrance through the viaduct under the Red Hill creek expressway.

The formations are made of large rocks and plants that form, for the first one, a giant bear paw print if seen from above, and soon in another spot — at the trail's end near the QEW bridge crossing — forming the shape of a turtle.

The meeting places offer trail users a place to sit and rest or take in nature.

The city has put out a call for tenders on The Turtle Meeting Place, with the closing date of Monday, Sept. 12. The work includes native seed planting, armour stone seats and the installation of granular pathways and seating areas.

Plans are being made for two more meeting places — the Nest and the Eel.

The meeting places are part of a collaboration between the city of Hamilton and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy of Six Nations to ecologically restore the Red Hill valley and to reconnect it with nature.

The collaboration is the result of agreements in 2003 between local aboriginals and the city following the controversy surrounding the construction of the expressway, formally called the Red Hill Valley Parkway.

Long-term plans include building a 6,000 sq. ft environmental interpretive centre to tell the story and history of the valley.
