| Work Detail | Matson has begun construction of its new corporate headquarters on Guam. The international shipping company's new corporate offices will be located on the edge of Hagåtña, near the Mobil gas station intersection across from Adelup. The physical site is two lots down from the Mobil along Marine Corps Drive going into the heart of Hagåtña. Bernie Valencia, Matson general manager for Guam and Micronesia, answered questions about the project for the Post. According to Valencia, the lot itself comprises 2,400 square meters and will host a three-story building with 10,000 square feet housed under its roof. The building will include a level for parking, leased office space and Matson's offices. Construction for the project began in June and is anticipated to be completed by the summer of 2017. The Matson offices will be used by 25 Matson staff and contractors, Valencia said. The location was chosen after a few years of searching for the "perfect location for its Guam flagship office." The plot in Hagåtña was ultimately selected over other options due to its proximity to the Port Authority of Guam and its overall central location, for the convenience of customers and employees who have to travel from all over the island. "We are committed to investing in our island and to provide a great place for our employees to work," Valencia stated. "By building at this location, Matson hopes to contribute to and support the revitalization of the village of Hagåtña, our island’s capital." Matson is currently operating out of their Tamuning office on Farenholt Avenue, where they moved after the port administration building caught fire in June 2015. Though Matson's primary administrative operations will be carried out at the new Hagåtña offices, Matson has said that it will keep its satellite office at the Guam United warehouse at the port for chassis maintenance and to address customer and operational concerns. The construction project – valued at approximately $6 million including land purchase, actual construction and furnishings for the final building – is being carried out by a team of RIM Architects and Black Construction. |
